Our Thinking
The thinking behind Ownerships.com, PremiumBrands and building useful businesses.
Why I would build on Ownerships
As the founder of PremiumBrands.com, I look at a name as someone who might use it. My question is straightforward: would I build on this? Ownerships.com interests me because the work of owning things keeps generating practical problems. Equipment needs a history. A company needs an organized set of records. An owner needs a place to find an experience that speaks to the decision in front of them. I can see a focused product or publication growing from any of those starting points.
The plural is part of the attraction. A founder might begin with a single category of equipment, but the working life of an operator usually contains several things to keep track of. There are individual records, different responsibilities and changes over time. Ownerships gives that founder a substantial name to put above a small, carefully chosen first release.
The name comes into the room early
The fix-it-later mindset puts the name off until the business is further along. By then, a name appears in more places than a browser tab. It goes into a spoken introduction, a sales email, a presentation and the way the team describes its own work. Choosing it early lets the founder make those introductions with the identity they intend to keep.
My experience with Newswire.com shaped that view. I acquired the press release distribution business operating on i-Newswire.com in 2007, secured iNewswire.com in 2013 and moved the business to Newswire.com in February 2015. The upgrade followed more than a year of negotiation and consultation with SEO professionals. It was a business decision made alongside the work of building the product and serving customers.
On the morning of the switch, a prospect told one of the sales agents, “Oh yeah, Newswire.com. I've heard of you guys.” That was impossible. I remember it because the new identity had entered the conversation before the salesperson had explained the business. It is one experience, but it made the difference between a provisional address and a clear brand feel very concrete to me.
More builders, a deliberate identity
Today, through PremiumBrands, I select names I would consider using myself. OnlineBusiness.com provides the background to my work in building businesses online. AI has made it possible for more people to turn a useful idea into something working. My view is that this makes the choice of a recognizable name worth making early: many people can build a similar tool, but they cannot all use the same identity.
With Ownerships, I would resist trying to cover the whole subject on day one. I would choose one recurring job, such as keeping an equipment record current, and spend time with the person doing it. The first useful screen could show the equipment, its responsible person and the next maintenance event. Ownerships gives the founder a name to put above that focused piece of work.
Buying with a builder's eye
I bought PremiumBrands.com before I had a plan for it. I valued the name and knew that waiting could mean finding it in use by an end user building something on it. I use the same end-user test when considering other names. The names I have not yet built on are the ones open to sale through PremiumBrands.
An Ownerships conversation can start with the direction you see: a record product, a workspace, a publication or a different business that fits the name. Payment plans and other structures are open to discussion. If the right name is outside the collection, PremiumBrands can help acquire the one you have your eye on.
I want a founder to be able to say the name of the business plainly, show the first useful thing it does and carry that identity into the next stage. The name is a head start, not the business: the founder still has to choose the fields, interview the operator and make the next record useful. For a product about the practical responsibilities of ownership, Ownerships is a name I would take into that first meeting. A premium .com is a trust shortcut.
